The Internet of Things in 2020 is still a really hot topic. With countless conferences, it’s toughto choose those that you should focus on attending. What I recommend is asking yourself these three questions before buying those conference tickets or booking that expo booth:
In this year’s list, I hope to give enough insight for you to answer the questions above.
MWC Barcelona
Location: Barcelona, Spain
Date: 24-27.02.2020
UPDATE: MWC 2020 in Barcelona was cancelled by the GSMA on Feb. 12th
MWC Barcelona certainly doesn’t need to be introduced for anyone that has anything to do with the mobile/IoT/IT industry. This event is definitely not to be missed for anyone who is interested in IoT.
Is this the IoT event for you?
Exhibitors and sponsors: From big industry players that are leaders in IoT platforms and technology to companies specializing in various niches of IoT and finally, innovative start-ups, MWC Barcelona has it all.
Agenda: Though the conference agenda does not include a special track for IoT, you will find lots of IoT-related content among the various conference tracks.
Attendee profile: Mobile World Congress is an event that covers so many areas of interest, it’s easier to distinguish who doesn’t fit the attendee profile than who does! Whether you’re a CEO or a technical product manager, MWC will surely leave you inspired and hungry for more.
Embedded World
Location: Nuremberg, Germany
Date: 25-27.02.2020
New to this listing but certainly not new in the industry, Embedded World is an interesting alternative to MWC Barcelona. As hardware and embedded technology is imperative to the growth of the IoT ecosystem, Nuremberg might be a destination that’s worth considering this February.
Is this the IoT event for you?
Exhibitors and sponsors: Even though you might not see many IoT-related companies among the sponsors of the event, take a closer look and you’ll see that among the event’s exhibitors are some leading vendors of both hardware and software IoT components.
Agenda: With panels and presentations on IoT topics every day, you will find the agenda to cover everything from IoT platforms to data analytics, security, connectivity and, of course, embedded topics, all topics relevant to building a comprehensive IoT ecosystem.
Attendee profile: You’ll definitely find a more technical audience here than at MWC. This is where the real experts from the industry meet!
IoT World
Location: San Jose, United States
Date: 10-13.08.2020
IoT World is another event that is widely known in the industry. This year, the date has been moved to early April so make sure to mark your calendars! What’s also worth mentioning is that the event is moving to the San Jose Convention Center this year and thus will be even bigger and (hopefully) better!
Is this the IoT event for you?
Exhibitors and sponsors: The big players in the IoT industry are all there. There’s no doubt about that. Even though the event takes place in the U.S., you’ll find that among the sponsors and exhibitors are vendors from all over the globe.
Agenda: The conference agenda in this event is always very promising. What is especially interesting is that the event features separate tracks for different types of IoT content. These include: 5G & Connectivity, AI, Edge Computing and Developer topics.
Attendee profile: The event could be of interest to any type of enterprise —–those that have are already long started building their IoT solutions and those that are just starting off their IoT journey.

IoT Solutions World Congress
Location: Barcelona
Date: 27-29.10.2020
A strictly IoT- focused event in Barcelona 6 months after MWC seemed like an option worth considering for us last year. A couple of months after the event I can say it was without a doubt worth it. IoT Solutions World Congress was a really successful event, both in terms of attendee turnout and quality of the conference.
Is this the IoT event for you?
Exhibitors and sponsors: Even though some large brands were missing the event brought to the table a kind of freshness thanks to the focus on real-life use cases and some innovative smaller vendors.
Agenda: The 2019 conference was in my opinion the best agenda put together throughout the entire events season last year. Compelling use cases and lots of insight from people actually doing IoT made it something I am definitely looking forward to watching closely in 2020.
Attendee profile: The event brought together a surprisingly global audience with companies from all continents and an interesting mix of enterprises from various sectors (telecommunications, retail, utilities, supply chain).
